Our Legacy

Gladeview Rehabilitation & Health Care Center was founded by Dr. Silberstein, whose courage and compassion shaped our mission.

At 20, while serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II, Dr. Silberstein sustained life-altering injuries that left him 100% disabled. Doctors expected he would remain bedridden, but through determination, faith, and exceptional care, he defied the odds.

He pursued medicine, earning a full fellowship at the University of Bern Medical School in Switzerland. Despite additional surgeries and hospitalizations that extended his studies by two years, he graduated first in his class.

Back in the U.S., he completed a Residency at the Institute of Living in Hartford, Connecticut, maintained a private practice in New Haven, and served as Associate Professor at Yale University School of Medicine. He held leadership roles in regional medical associations and served as Surgeon General of the Disabled American Veterans of Connecticut.

After three decades as a physician, Dr. Silberstein helped design several major eldercare facilities and founded Gladeview in 1987 to create a home-like community where residents could live fully and with dignity. To ensure its success, he trained as a licensed Nursing Home Administrator at nearly 70 years old.

Dr. Silberstein’s philosophy guided every decision: “People should have a life for as long as they live. That’s why we’re here.”

Today, Gladeview continues under the leadership of his wife, Linda Silberstein, a biologist who worked on the Biology of Aging Program at Washington University Medical School. Her expertise and dedication to geriatric wellness keep Gladeview at the forefront of compassionate, research-based care.

Together with our exceptional staff, Linda carries forward Dr. Silberstein’s legacy—providing whole-person care for mind, body, and spirit in a warm, home-like waterfront setting, supporting residents’ independence and offering peace of mind to families.
